First Trailer for “Hysteria” Released | August 16, 2011

“Must be difficult pleasuring half the women in the city.” Despite that rather dainty photo, this flick is about the origins of the vibrator. It actually looks pretty good, too. Another new trailer for a recently announced TIFF film – Tanya Wexler’s Hysteria, starring Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal, a cheeky romantic comedy set in Victorian London about the invention of the world’s first vibrator. Also stars Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Gemma Jones and Felicity Jones, who is barely in the trailer at all. This actually looks fun, I think that’s the best way to describe it. Just fire up the trailer below, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Enjoy!

Hugh Dancy Joins Broadway Cast of “Venus in Fur” |

When Hugh Dancy made his Broadway debut in the 2007 revival of “Journey’s End,” it was as a British Army captain down in the trenches of World War I. When Mr. Dancy returns to Broadway this fall, he won’t be taking on the Central Powers – he’ll face off against Nina Arianda in Manhattan Theater Club’s coming production of “Venus in Fur,” the David Ives comedy-drama about an ever-shifting audition encounter between a director and an actress, the production’s press representatives said on Monday.

So is preparing for war more or less demanding than preparing to take on the formidable Ms. Arianda?

“I’ll have to go for option C,” Mr. Dancy said in a telephone interview. “Demanding in a different way. The difference, obviously, is that in ‘Journey’s End’ I was in the middle of a thick ensemble and it was a three-hour night in the theater. This is essentially one constantly evolving 90-minute scene between two actors, which was the appeal, really.”

Mr. Dancy, who has also appeared Off-Broadway in “The Pride,” in films like “Adam” and on television in “Elizabeth I” and “The Big C,” said he did not see the original Classic Stage Company production of “Venus in Fur,” which won rave reviews for Ms. Arianda and co-starred Wes Bentley in the role he is about to take on.

But having read Mr. Ives’s script, Mr. Dancy said, “The writing turns on a dime. It seems like it goes through so many evolutions, so many twists and turns. But I haven’t actually started yet. I’m in that state of ignorant bliss, I suppose.”

Mr. Dancy said he has so far only encountered Ms. Arianda in meetings with the “Venus in Fur” director Walter Bobbie and Manhattan Theater Club executives. But their future showdown was not the most pressing of his concerns.

“I’ve not been in the situation before of jumping into a production that’s already had a previous incarnation,” Mr. Dancy said, “so I don’t how that’ll go. I hope it’s not just three weeks of them waiting for me to catch up.”

The Broadway production of “Venus in Fur” will be presented at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater, with previews to begin on Oct. 13 and an opening night planned for Nov. 8.

Dorothy of Oz Concept Art | June 26, 2010

Did you hear that The Wizard of Oz is returning to the big screen? Oh, this isn’t going to look like the Oz you may remember. The reboot musical will come to us sometime in 2012 in 3D. BSCKids brought the word of this to the BSC Empire over the weekend at this exciting new project thanks to Collider.com and www.dorothyofozthemovie.com. Make sure to check out our sister site’s write-up for the other images! There is casting news that comes along with these fantastic character sketches the animated feature Dorothy of Oz. Glee’s Lea Michele will be filling Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Dan Aykroyd will voice the Scarecrow. Kelsey Grammar is the Tin man. Jim Belushi is the Lion. Megan Hilty, Hugh Dancy, Martin Short, Oliver Platt, and Patrick Stewart also fill out the voice talent.

The source material is from the book by by Roger S. Baum, the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz!. To accompany the beautiful early sketches, here’s the film’s official synopsis:

There is trouble in Oz and Dorothy is needed! With Glinda’s help, she and Toto return to Oz. Joined by her old friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion as well as exciting new characters, Dorothy sets out on a perilous journey to stop the crafty Jester from using the power of the Wicked Witch of the West’s wand to turn the people of Oz into puppets. That seems to be the least of Dorothy’s problems as her travels lead her straight into a treacherous maze, a cave full of very hungry dragons and an evil spell that could destroy the Yellow Brick Road. Dorothy has the daunting knowledge that it is up to her to stop Jester’s terrible plan. Audiences will welcome the return of the old Oz favorites and will love meeting new friends like Tugg a gruff talking boat and Wiser an owl with an unlucky attraction to molasses.

Written in the whimsical style of L. Frank Baum, “Dorothy of Oz” is sure to delight Oz fans old and new as they journey once again into the magical land of OZ.

Hugh Dancy and More to Present At Lortel Awards | April 24, 2010

Justin Bartha, Saffron Burrows, Charles Busch, Keith Carradine, Hugh Dancy, Michael Esper, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Halston, Patrick Heusinger, Tom Jones, Zoe Kazan, Anthony LaPaglia, Anthony Mackie, Aasif Mandvi, Stephanie March, Laurie Metcalf, Jennifer Morrison, Rosie Perez, Lily Rabe, Ally Sheedy, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Tamara Tunie, Michael Urie, and Kerry Washington will be among the presenters at the 2010 Lucille Lortel Awards, honoring excellence in Off-Broadway theater, to be held at Terminal 5 in New York City, on May 2, at 8pm.

As previously announced, Bryan Batt and Bebe Neuwirth will co-host the ceremony, while performers will include LaChanze and Seth Rudetsky. In addition, composer Alan Menken will perform a medley from Little Shop of Horrors, the cast of Stomp will perform a segment from their show, and there will be a performance of “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks.

The theme of the ceremony is “Off-Broadway Comes Home” and the show will be directed by Michael Heitzman with musical direction by David Holcenberg. The Lortel Awards are a benefit for The Actors Fund.
